I met a man from Romania the other day (who is now a U.S. citizen).
He told me about a phone call he received from a cousin in Russia recently.
His Russian cousin was angry about the fact that he could no longer use WhatsApp. But who did he blame?
He didn’t blame Putin or the Russian government, who are responsible for the ban.
He blamed the United States, which he said was purposefully throttling WhatsApp in Russia. For what reason, he couldn’t say.
The man from Romania asked his cousin why Telegram was blocked too in that case, since Telegram is an app created by Russians.
The Russian once again said “the United States is doing this too.”
That’s some stunning cognitive dissonance.
The conversation had other details.
This Russian man also revealed that he believed the Ukrainian military had been defeated long ago, and that the Russians were now fighting American and European soldiers on Ukrainian soil, wearing down NATO resistance one little bit at a time.
Never mind the fact that in reality, the U.S. can’t even be bothered to *sell* sufficient weapons to Ukraine right now, let alone send our soldiers to fight there on our own dime.
This was a revealing conversation.
It was a rare glimpse for me into the mind of an actual Russian man who is almost completely closed off from the outside world.
His understanding of the situation is so warped, it goes further than even the worst Russian propaganda does.
It exposes exactly why Russians continue to join this war. They live in an alternate reality, one from which they find it almost impossible to escape.
And in this alternate reality, their war makes all the sense in the world to them.
These soldiers are aggressors, but in many ways, they are also victims of endless lies, a firehouse of falsehoods. On the other hand, it just so happens that these are lies that they *want* to believe. They *want* a reason to fight Ukrainians, and Americans, and Europeans - for glory, and money, and all the rest. So no one is truly without blame.
This is why we continue to do what we do. The truth matters.

We had LOTS of great questions for this week's Insider Q&A!
- How do AI drones actually work, and why are they better than traditional drones?
- What are the ethical considerations with AI drones? Should such drones even exist?
- If Russia is forgiving loans for new recruits, won't Russians just take out debt and then sign up for the debt forgiveness?
- What would prevent Russia from destroying Swedish Gripens on the ground?
- Are Russia's new bombing tactics against Kyiv any different than what we've already seen before?
- At what point does repeated Russian Oreshnik use demand a much stronger Western response?
- Is Russian using the Oreshnik missiles to desensitize the West to nuclear capable launches?
- Are drones making offensive war obsolete?
- Would the next Russian leader be any better than Vladimir Putin?
- What content will I make once the Ukraine War is over?
