Sir Keir Starmer has urged Andy Burnham not to launch an immediate bid for the Labour leadership if he becomes an MP, saying the focus should instead be on the upcoming Greater Manchester mayoral election.
Burnham is widely expected to challenge for the leadership if he wins Thursday's by-election in Makerfield. A victory would also mean stepping down as Mayor of Greater Manchester, triggering a contest to choose his replacement.
Speaking at the G7 summit, Starmer said the potential mayoral election would be "very important", adding that Labour were "going to have to pull our sleeves up to make sure that there is another Labour victory".
The Prime Minster also said a leadership contest would be a "bad thing" for the country and added: "I hope he wins the by-election and he'll play a big part in the Labour government."
